Events play a significant role in the liveability, lifestyle and image of the Gold Coast while providing benefits to the city’s economy.

The Gold Coast has seen exceptional success in recent years in attracting major events to the city and has earned the region a reputation as a global events destination. However, this is just the start of the journey with the City of Gold Coast aiming to boost the number of major events held in the city, leveraging the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to evolve the city’s reputation as a major event host.

2018 Magic Millions Carnival | Gold Coast Turf Club | 5 – 16 January

An intensive week of racehorse sales, attracting the who’s who of the racing industry to the Gold Coast Turf Club. The social highlight is the Magic Millions Raceday, which features the richest race in Queensland. A classic Gold Coast summer event, tailor made for buyers, punters and fashionistas.

Burleigh Pro | Burleigh Heads | 25 – 28 January

The 2018 Burleigh Pro has been further bolstered with an additional day being added to the already world famous event. The four day event will attract some of the best surfers in the world who are battling it out for the valuable World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) points and prize purse.  The natural amphitheatre which is Burleigh Heads is the best spot to catch all the action as some of the world’s best surfers go head to head.

Sand Safari | Surfers Paradise | 9 – 25 February

The Surfers Paradise foreshore and some other locations around town become a sand and sea inspired art gallery during this 17 day event.  It features the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships, a sand trail across the city, along with sand art activities and workshops.

Australian Athletics Championships | Carrara Stadium | 15 – 18 February

Athletes from across the nation will duel for the coveted title of national champion on the hallowed turf of Metricon Stadium in Carrara.  Providing a most important preparation opportunity on the same track and field that will welcome athletes for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), the four-day timetable will also double as the Nomination Trial for the Australian athletics team for GC2018.

Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial | Southport Broadwater Parklands | 25 February

The 2018 Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial includes a packed entertainment schedule for the whole family to enjoy, with the best place for viewing the action from Mitchell Park where you will see the athletes transition from each leg and as it is a multi-lap course you will see them on each lap of the cycle and run.

2018 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials | Gold Coast Aquatic Centre | 28 February – 3 March

See the stars of swimming light up the night as they compete for selection for the Australian Commonwealth Games Team! Be part of the excitement over 4 days and nights, with swimming heroes Cam McEvoy, Cate Campbell, Ellie Cole, Kyle Chalmers and Mack Horton taking on Australia’s best to secure their place on the team.

Quiksilver and Roxy Pro | Snapper Rocks | 11 – 22 March

Witness world-class surfing on world-class waves at world famous Snapper Rocks, the leading right hand point break in the southern hemisphere. The first stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour, this event sees the world’s top 34 males and top 18 females battle it out in a spectator sport not to be missed.

Bleach* Festival | Gold Coast – citywide | 29 March – 15 April

Bleach* Festival drenches the Gold Coast with a three-week, high-energy, action-packed parade of live music, beach concerts, theatre, performing arts, film and fun. Bleach* Festival HQ is the Southern Gold Coast but satellite events throughout the northern Gold Coast spread the best of Bleach* across the length and breadth of the city.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games | Citywide | 4 – 15 April

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be the largest sporting event Australia will see this decade and the biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast has ever seen. As the first regional Australian city to ever host a Commonwealth Games, the Gold Coast will celebrate a great Games in a great city leaving great memories and great benefits for all. On 4 April 2018, over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories will converge on the Gold Coast for an 11 day sporting and cultural event.  With the proud support of close to 15,000 passionate and friendly volunteers, a spectacle of 18 sports and 7 para-sports will be contested and broadcast to a cumulative global audience of 1.5 billion.

Gold Coast Film Festival | Gold Coast – citywide | 17 – 29 April

Walk the red carpet on opening night alongside actors, filmmakers and film crew. Learn from Australia’s leading producers, writers and directors at intimate seminars and workshops. At the Gold Coast Film Festival, you will be captivated by internationally acclaimed dramas, comedies and genre films, locally made indie gems, engaging documentaries, family features, anime and the scariest horror films. With more than 80 film and film related events in 8 different locations, this festival is a celebration of film and film making from one of Australia’s top film destinations – the Gold Coast.

Cooly Classic Ocean Swim | Coolangatta | 13 May

Join swimmers from all over Australia for the Gold Coast’s premier ocean swim.  The Cooly Classic offers competitors a rare opportunity to conquer three of Australia’s most revered surf breaks – Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta and Kirra.  If you’re a seasoned swimmer or aspiring triathlete, the 3.0km long course is a great opportunity to test yourself beyond the typical open water distances.

Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival | Broadbeach | 17 – 20 May

Blues on Broadbeach is one of Australia’s largest free music festivals spanning four bluesy days and nights, with a unique, village-like atmosphere and relaxed ambience. The free and non-ticketed event nurtures Australian talent as well as providing a stage for international acts.

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show | Sanctuary Cove | 24 – 27 May

One of the most popular Gold Coast events, this four day show boasts more than 400 exhibitors. At this venue, you’ll come across Australian products as well as international products from Italy, China, Japan, UAE, India, the USA and the UK – exquisite boat varieties.

Cooly Rocks On | Southern Gold Coast | 6 – 10 June

The biggest 50s and 60s nostalgia festival in Australia! More than two kilometres of rock ‘n roll, Rockabilly, swing music and 1,000 hot rods, custom cars and classic vehicles lining the stunning beachfront of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads all over 5 huge days.

Australian Open Bowls | Broadbeach Bowls Club | 9 – 22 June

The World’s Biggest Bowls Festival will again hit the sunny Gold Coast – the lawn bowls capital of Australia. With $250,000 in prize money and a freshly renovated venue hot off the back of the Commonwealth Games, this competition will see plenty of people ready to roll up.

Gold Coast Marathon | Southport Broadwater Parklands | 30 June – 1 July

Australia’s premier road race attracts more than 27,000 participants of all ages and abilities. The scenic course is considered one of the flattest and fastest courses in the world and the time of year usually boasts excellent weather conditions for running.

60th TV Week Logie Awards | The Star, Broadbeach | 1 July 

The TV Week Logie Awards (the Logies) are an annual event celebrating Australian television.  Established in 1960, the Logies have been held predominantly in Melbourne, Victoria, with the Gold Coast now the events new home.  The awards ceremony includes national and international entertainment and is broadcast free to air on Channel 9.

Australian University Nationals (Division 2) | Citywide | 1 – 5 July

This flagship event on the national university sporting calendar splits into two divisions for the first time in 2018.  Competing across more than 30 sports, the Gold Coast welcomes students from across Australia to take part in a week of serious sport and serious fun.

Groundwater Country Music Festival | Broadbeach | 27  – 29 July

Centred around the pristine beachfront of Broadbeach, this free festival sees a perfect mix of board shorts and banjos, surf boards and steel guitars as country music’s finest assemble for three days and nights of classic entertainment. The Groundwater Country Music Festival celebrated its inaugural year in June 2013 with 20,000 attending over the three days with this number jumping to a whopping 55,000 boot scooters in 2017.

ITU World Triathlon Grand Final | Southport Broadwater Parklands | 12 – 16 September 

More than 5,000 of the world’s best elite and age group triathletes will be heading to the Gold Coast for the final race of the 2018 season.  Athletes representing 46 nations will be competing at Southport Broadwater Parklands, the site of the highly successful ITU World Triathlon Gold Coast and home to the 2009 ITU World Championships.  The 2018 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final will celebrate the diversity of the sport of triathlon with athletes competing in Elite, Under 23, Junior and Elite Paratriathlon categories as well as the U23/Jnr Mixed Team Relay, Age Group – Standard and Sprint Distance, and Open Paratriathlon events.

Australian University Nationals (Division 1) | Citywide | 22 – 27 September

SWELL Sculpture Festival | Southern Gold Coast | 14 – 23 September 

Currumbin Beach transforms into a vibrant outdoor gallery with Queensland’s largest, free outdoor exhibition SWELL Sculpture Festival. Open all hours, you can enjoy twilight walks, informative artist talks, discover new perspectives, wander through the Swell Smalls Gallery or participate in artist master classes and children’s workshops. The artworks are lit at night for a totally different perspective.

Robbie McEwen Granfondo | Gold Coast Hinterland | 23 September

A mass participation cycling event with individual events for recreational cycling enthusiasts from beginner level to elite and also for children.  In its 7th year, the aim is to give people the opportunity to ride on a supervised course while experiencing the beauty of the Gold Coast hinterland. Offering three courses of various distances, the event caters for different levels of ability which provides an opportunity for more riders to take part.

Australian Transplant Games | Citywide | 30 September – 6 October

The Transplant Games are a fantastic celebration of the gift of life that transplantation is and are centred around saying thanks for organ donation and promoting transplantation to Australia and the World.  Last held on the Gold Coast in 2002, the 17th edition of this annual event is sure to capitalise on the new world class sporting venues that are available as a legacy of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Coolangatta Gold | Coolangatta Beach | 6 – 7 October

The Coolangatta Gold is one of the most challenging endurance races in surf sports. It is open to the public and consists of a 33.6 km Short Course and a 41.8 km Long Course race. The multi-disciplinary course combines swimming, running, board paddling and surf skiing. Take it on as an individual or a team and challenge yourself.

Gold Coast 600 | Surfers Paradise | 19 – 21 October

Known as the Gold Coast’s biggest party, the Gold Coast 600 sees the Supercar Championship drivers battle through one of the world’s toughest street circuits to claim the ultimate endurance racing title. If the day time action isn’t enough for you, the entertainment continues into the evenings.

World Parachuting Championships | Runaway Bay | 7 – 13 October 

The 2018 World Parachuting Championships will bring close to 1000 international skydivers to the Gold Coast. The event will be held at the Sports Super Centre located in Runaway Bay where skydivers will land, pack parachutes and practise routines before leaping from aircraft some 14,000 feet above the Gold Coast.

Pan Pacific Masters Games | Citywide | 2 – 11 November

More than 14,000 athletes from over 30 countries will converge on the Gold Coast to compete in the world’s biggest and best biennial masters games. The Gold Coast’s famous celebration of masters sport will showcase competition in more than 40 sports at some of the best sporting facilities on the planet and feature a jam-packed nightly entertainment program at the Games Village.

International T20 Cricket | Carrara | 17 November

Metricon Stadium, the home of the Gold Coast SUNS will host its first International cricket match this summer, which will see Australia play South Africa in a Gillette T20 International.

Australian PGA Championships | RACV Royal Pines | 29 November – 2 December

Australia’s most energetic golf tournament, the Australian PGA Championship is back at RACV Royal Pines Resort.  Featuring Masters Champion’s Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott in the past, the event will feature a stellar list of Australian and international players who will compete for the Joe Kirkwood Cup.  The tournament hosts an array of entertainment on and off the course with fans celebrating in the sun with great food, music and entertainment – this one is a real festival of golf!
